Chronically Navigating Through Life

Tried It: African Pride’s Peppermint, Rosemary, & Sage Strengthening Mask

July 22, 2025

My locs have been feeling thirstier than usual, and my scalp has been a flaky, itchy mess. On my last wash day, I used some random conditioner and immediately noticed a difference in my locs. This wash day, I was committed to doing better. I tried to stick with my “old faithful” from Design Essentials called the Rosemary Mint Stimulating Super Moisturizing Conditioner, but I guess word is out that it’s amazing because it was sold out on Amazon and my usual beauty shops. I figured it would be a great time to test out a new loc product. Here’s my honest review of African Pride’s  Peppermint, Rosemary, & Sage Strengthening Mask.

Highlighted Ingredients:

Other Factors

  • Smell: 10/10 for me. I loved it—perfect balance of mint and rosemary.
  • Texture: Very thick. The conditioner felt rich and heavy. It didn’t take a lot of product to coat my locs and roots.
  • Packaging: Pretty basic conditioner container. Very similar to the Design Essential conditioner container. I like the green and mint colors.

Why I Chose This Mask

It came down to the price, ingredients, and accessibility.  I paid $7.99 for it, and it has 340 grams | 12oz of conditioner. I usually pay $13.99 for the Design Essentials Rosemary Mint Stimulating Super Moisturizing Conditioner. So it’s almost half the price I usually pay. I’m really big on what’s inside the products that I use, so of course, the first thing I looked at was that ingredient label. The essential oils (peppermint, rosemary, and sage oil) caught my interest. I found this mask at my local Family Dollar store, and it’s also available at Target, Amazon, Walmart, CVS, Sally Beauty, and Walgreens. I loved that it was a quick run into the Family Dollar and done.

Application & Wash Day Experience

I applied this product to freshly washed hair. I let my locs remain slightly damp so application would be easier. I applied about ⅓ cup of the mask to my roots/new growth. For the length of my locs, I gently raked in the product, but didn’t overdo it with the amount of product I used. I focused a lot on massaging the mask into the ends of my locs, too.

After I had the mask on my hair, I took my time massaging it into my scalp and locs. I then separated my hair into two pig tails and placed two plastic bags on each side and wrapped everything under a big bonnet (to hold the bags in place lol). I sat under the dryer for about 30 minutes on medium heat.

Texture & Slip

Perfect balance of thickness and slip when applying the mask to my hair. I can tell immediately if a conditioner is going to mix well with my hair based on the application and how the product feels. This mask felt like it melted into my scalp and hair and immediately made my hair more manageable and moisturized.

Tingling Sensations

The tingling and sensations from the peppermint and rosemary essential oils felt amazing! It felt like my scalp was being stimulated, which was a huge relief since I’ve been dealing with eczema and a flaky scalp lately. When I sat under the hair dryer for the deep conditioning time, the tingling just intensified. It felt like this mask was doing something.

Results After Rinsing

I washed the mask out of my locs using lukewarm water (not too hot or too cold) to help seal in the moisture. I immediately noticed the softness, and my coils were defined, especially the new growth. I noticed the actual retwist process went smoother because my hair wasn’t super dry and breaking when I parted. My scalp felt like it just had a big soothing, minty hug. Overall, my hair smelled great even after a few days of using this product.

Final Thoughts

I loved how affordable and conveniently located this product is. I am also a big fan of the “feel it formula” and the ingredients used to make it. I think they are very loc-friendly ingredients. The formula was thick but slick enough for an easy rinse out. I often see people struggling to use conditioner on their locs because of the difficulty in rinsing it out. The smell and sensory experience while using this mask were the best. Smells amazing and gives you a tingling sensation in your scalp that awakens your senses. It put me in a great mood. The only con that I can give this mask is that I could see someone being a little overwhelmed with the tingling sensation if you’re not into that.

❄️ June is Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month! 🎀 M ❄️ June is Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month! 🎀

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes muscle weakness and fatigue by disrupting communication between the nerves and muscles.

Symptoms can include:
✨ Drooping eyelids
✨ Double vision
✨ Difficulty speaking or swallowing
✨ Weakness in the arms and legs
✨ Shortness of breath
✨ Extreme fatigue

MG is often invisible, unpredictable, and misunderstood, but for those of us living with it, the impact is very real.
This month, I’m helping spread awareness, sharing my journey, and amplifying the voices of others in the MG community 🩷

💗 June is Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month, and i 💗 June is Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month, and it only feels right to share what I’ve been navigating behind the scenes.

What started as the flu quickly spiraled into one of the most severe MG exacerbations I’ve experienced. Within days, I found myself in the ICU fighting to regain strength to breathe & walk comfortably.

✨This carousel walks through my timeline, treatments, and what recovery has looked like so far. ℹ️I’m unable to get IVIG for MG emergencies ✨

🩸 PLEX is a procedure that removes blood from the body, separates out the plasma containing harmful antibodies, and returns the blood with replacement fluids. For MG’ers it can help remove the antibodies that attack communication between nerves and muscles.
